An ophthalmologist is a physician who specializes in eye and vision care. Ophthalmologists are different from optometrists and opticians in that they have higher levels of training and can diagnose and treat a wider range of conditions. Ophthalmologists complete college and go on to receive an additional eight years of medical training before they may practice ophthalmology. Ophthalmologists are licensed to practice both medicine and surgery. Typical duties of an ophthalmologist include the diagnosis and treatment of all eye diseases, performing eye surgery and prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. Some ophthalmologists also involve themselves in the scientific research on causes and cures of various eye diseases.
